| PlayStation awarded Guinness record for consoles sales on its 25th birthday |
The original PlayStation Japanese console was unveiled on December 3, 1994. On the 25th anniversary of the PlayStation console, Guinness World Records set it the world record for best-selling console.
The PlayStation is by far the most successful console. It sold 100,000 units on the day of its launch 25 years ago.
The PlayStation consoles were fiercely competed with by Nintendo 64 and Sega Saturn, but sales of the PlayStation 1 exceeded the combined sales of these two consoles.
All versions of the PlayStation have sold a total of 450 million units.
The PlayStation 2, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation are the best-selling versions.
Sony said last month that the PlayStation 4 outperformed the Wii in overall sales.
Gainer World Records named the PlayStation the best-selling console.
In early November, the PlayStation met its sales target of 450 million units.
